Local SEO: A Practical Guide to Ranking in Google Maps

When people search for a service near them, Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Here is how local rankings work and the steps that help your business earn one of those spots.

Local searches carry strong intent. Someone searching for a dentist, a plumber or a marketing agency near them is usually ready to call. The map results, often called the local pack, take a large share of those clicks, so appearing there can matter more than ranking first in the normal results.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location named in their search.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, based on reviews, links, articles and how it appears across the web.

You cannot change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence a great deal.

Step 1: Complete and optimise your Google Business Profile

  • Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories.
  • Write a clear business description that mentions your main services and area naturally.
  • Add every service, your opening hours, phone number and website link.
  • Upload real photos of your work, team and premises, and keep adding new ones.
  • Use posts to share offers, updates and recent work.

Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Google cross-checks your details across the web. Make sure your business name, address and phone number are written exactly the same on your website, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and directories such as Justdial or listings specific to your industry.

Step 3: Earn reviews the right way

Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals, and they persuade customers too. Ask every happy client, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly.

Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile suspended.

Step 4: Build local pages on your website

Your website supports your profile. Create a page for each main service and, if you serve several areas, a genuinely useful page for each one with real local details, not the same text with the city name swapped. Add LocalBusiness schema and include your address and a map on your contact page.

Step 5: Track what matters

Your Google Business Profile shows how many people found you, called you, asked for directions or visited your website. Check it every month, along with your rankings for your main service in your area, so you can see what is working and what is not.

Common local SEO mistakes

  • Using a different business name on your profile and your website.
  • Stuffing keywords into your business name, which breaks Google’s guidelines.
  • Listing a virtual office address where you cannot meet customers.
  • Ignoring negative reviews instead of replying professionally.
  • Setting up the profile once and never updating it.
