What Google AI Overviews actually are (and why they matter for leads)
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google results. Under the summary, Google shows a handful of links to the pages it used. Those links are the “citations” every business now wants.
For a business owner, this matters for one simple reason. When someone searches “how much does a dental implant cost in Bhubaneswar” or “best way to waterproof a terrace before monsoon”, the AI Overview is often the first thing they read. If your page is one of the cited sources, you are part of the answer before the person scrolls to a single normal result.
Google’s own documentation on AI features and your website also says something I find encouraging: clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning people spend more time on the site. In my experience, a visitor who arrives after reading a summary already understands the basics and is closer to making a decision.
One honest point before we start: AI Overviews only appear when Google decides they add something to the normal results, so they do not show for every search. You are optimising for the searches where they do appear, without neglecting the ones where they do not.
What Google says you need to appear in AI Overviews
A lot of advice online makes this sound mysterious. Google’s official guidance is actually short and plain. According to Search Central, there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must:
- Be indexed in Google Search
- Be eligible to show with a snippet (so you have not blocked snippets with nosnippet or similar)
- Meet Google’s normal Search technical requirements
Google also states that you do not need new machine-readable files, “AI text files” or special schema markup to appear in these features. If someone is selling you a magic AI Overviews plugin, be sceptical.
The useful detail is how the answers are built. Google explains that AI Overviews may use a “query fan-out” technique, running several related searches across subtopics to put together a response. In practice, that means a page which covers the main question and the natural follow-up questions has more chances to be picked up.
If you want the wider picture of how AI search works across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, I have covered that in what is AI SEO.

Step 1: Fix the basics that stop you being considered at all
Before you write a single new paragraph, check that Google can actually use your pages. I usually start every AI visibility project here, because it is where the quickest problems hide.
- Verify your site in Google Search Console. It is free, and it tells you which pages are indexed and which are not.
- Check robots.txt and your hosting or CDN settings. Some security plugins and firewalls quietly block Googlebot. If Google cannot crawl it, it cannot cite it.
- Look for accidental nosnippet or noindex tags. These are sometimes left on after a website redesign.
- Keep important content as real text. Prices, service areas and key answers locked inside images or PDFs are harder for Google to use.
- Link to your important pages internally so Google can find them easily.
- Make sure the page loads well on mobile. Most of your Indian customers will search on a phone, often on a patchy connection.
If any of this sounds technical, my technical SEO checklist walks through each item in order. Allow a few hours for a small site; larger sites can take a few days.
Step 2: Write pages that answer real questions directly
Once the technical side is clean, the deciding factor is the content itself. AI Overviews are built from pages that answer the question clearly, so your job is to make your answer the easiest one to quote.
Start with the questions your customers actually ask
Write down the questions you hear on the phone, at the counter or on WhatsApp every week. Those are better topics than anything a keyword tool suggests on its own. For example, a solar installer might hear “Is a 3 kW system enough for a 2BHK?” ten times a month. That is a page.
Put the answer first
Answer the question in the first one or two sentences, then explain. A good structure looks like this:
- A direct answer at the top (one or two sentences)
- The factors that change the answer
- A short list of steps, options or costs
- Common mistakes or exceptions
- The follow-up questions people usually ask next
Cover the follow-up questions
Because of query fan-out, the follow-ups matter. If your page on “GST registration for a small business” also answers who needs it, what documents are required and how long it usually takes, it can support several parts of one AI answer.
Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content is the best checklist here. Ask yourself whether the page shows real experience, whether a reader would feel they learned enough, and whether it was written for people rather than for search engines.
Step 3: Build trust signals Google can see
Google wants to cite sources that look reliable. You cannot fake this, but you can make your real expertise visible.
- Show who wrote it. Add an author name, role and a short bio. A page signed by a practising doctor, chartered accountant or engineer carries more weight than an anonymous one.
- Be specific about your business. Name your city, service areas, years in business and what you actually do. Vague pages blend into each other.
- Keep your Google Business Profile up to date. Google’s AI features guidance specifically mentions keeping Business Profile information current. Hours, categories, services and photos all count.
- Use structured data that matches the page. Schema is not required for AI Overviews, but if you use it (for example LocalBusiness, FAQ or Product), it must match the visible text.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Being listed in respected local directories, industry associations and local news gives Google more confidence in who you are.
For local businesses, these signals overlap heavily with Maps rankings. If that is your priority, read how to rank Google Business Profile listings in the top three.
Common mistakes I see business owners make
Most businesses that are never cited are not doing anything terrible. They are usually making one or two of these mistakes:
- Thin service pages. A single paragraph saying “We offer the best interior design in Pune” gives Google nothing to quote.
- Burying the answer. Three paragraphs of company history before the actual information.
- Writing only for keywords. Repeating a phrase ten times reads badly and does not help an AI system understand your expertise.
- Mass-produced AI content. Generic articles that say what every other site says. If your page adds nothing new, there is no reason to cite it over a bigger brand.
- Outdated information. Old prices, old rules or old opening hours. AI summaries and customers both lose trust quickly.
- Not measuring. Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the overall Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate AI Overviews filter, so watch impressions and clicks on the pages you improve, and track enquiries in your analytics.
A realistic expectation: after you improve a page, recrawling can take anywhere from days to a few months. This is steady work, not an overnight switch.
Practical next steps (and when to get help)
If you want to start this week, here is a simple plan that works for small businesses in India and for international clients alike:
- Day 1: Verify Search Console and check that your top 10 pages are indexed and not blocked.
- Day 2: List the 10 questions customers ask you most often.
- Days 3 to 7: Pick your three most valuable questions and rewrite or create one page for each, answer first, follow-ups included.
- Week 2: Update your Google Business Profile, add author details and tidy up internal links.
- Monthly: Search your key questions on Google, note whether an AI Overview appears and who is cited, and improve one page at a time.
You can do much of this yourself if you have a few hours a week. Where most owners get stuck is the technical audit and knowing which pages are worth the effort. That is exactly what my AI SEO services cover, and if you want ongoing help across Google and AI search, have a look at my SEO packages.
If you would like a second pair of eyes first, request a quick SEO audit at technosubrat.in/contact or message me on WhatsApp. I will tell you plainly what is stopping your pages being cited and what to fix first.
